Deep in a mountain valley of the Chugiak National Forest and just off the shores of Kenai Lake lies a small horse ranch, an Alaskan outfit, and home of Alaska Horsemen Trail Adventures.
Owners Alex Kime and daughter Gretchen started the ranch in 1997 with 8 horses. Today, they have grown to over 30 horses and are well known for providing the best horseback riding in Alaska. Specializing in "True Alaskan Hospitality," guests comment on the serenity they experience at the ranch. Their care of the horses, the "pioneer" appearance of the lodge, their adventurous spirit and professionalism of the business have gained them television appearances of such programs as Country Music’s "Hit Trip", Fox’s "Bacherloretes in Alaska, Larry Csonka’s North to Alaska Show" and Paul Gray’s ‘The Alaska show’. Alaska Horsemen Trail Adventures was chosen ‘Outstanding Business in Tourism’ on the Kenai Peninsula in 2002.
In addition to offering trail rides to travelers and locals, Alaska Horsemen offers an onsite Base Camp where guests can base themselves at our ranch where they may enjoy a multitude of activities that our mountain valley has to offer as well as enjoy our lodge amenities. We have a modern three bedroom guest house available as well as cozy wall tent cabins.
Guests visiting our Base Camp may spend their evenings discovering the local restaurants, or take advantage of our base camp kitchen privileges or perhaps cook their day’s catch at our fire pit or grill. There is lots of wood to burn at our fire pit and the mountain view is astounding from their lawn chair. A hot steam in our unique rock sauna will warm your bones after a day on the river or horse back riding. There is a horse shoe throwing pit and volley ball net for guests. There is a canoe for the lake or bikes to ride on our country road. Next door is the Sunrise Inn Café and Lounge.
Fishing is a huge recreation here as we are at the Head Waters of the Famous Kenai River, known for its Rainbow trout and Salmon fishing. Split your group up if you like: some go on a guided fishing trip , some horseback riding or perhaps just relax for the day. Meet back here for your own Salmon Bake at our ranch fire pit.
A Saddle/Paddle trip combines horseback riding with rafting or a guided fishing float. We offer a scenic float trip down the Kenai River in a big rubber Raft, it’s a serene float, fine for all ages. Includes Gold Panning and a tasty campfire lunch.
Wilderness trips into the Chugach National Forest or the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge are simply awesome. We can customize a multi-day pack trip into the wilderness valleys or do a multitude of exciting day trips with lodging at our Base Camp here in Cooper Landing. Photography trips for wildlife, a specialty. Extreme horse back riding into wilderness mountain camps for the adventurer, our specialty.
Cooper Landing is the heart of the Kenai Peninsula as we are a scenic 100 mile drive from Anchorage, 45 miles from Seward (and the Kenai Fjords adventure), 50 miles from Soldotna and sister city- Kenai and 125 miles on down to Homer. Besides boasting the home of the Kenai River and Kenai Lake, we have several great hiking trails as well as white water rafting rivers close by and flight seeing tours for wildlife. Evening drives in your rental car exploring and looking for moose and bear and eagles is a fun way to end your evening.
It would be our utmost pleasure to share this magnificent county with you and provide a safe, memorable horseback experience on our Alaskan trail horses. Let our staff help put a vacation package together for you or your group that captures the finest activities for your vacation. Alex Kime, your host, has been living and adventuring in Alaska since 1963. You will experience True Alaskan Hospitality at the Alaska Horsemen Ranch. See you soon.
